Philip Pocock was born in Ottawa, Canada in 1954. An NYU film graduate, he began exhibiting work at Cooper Union, New York and the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1980. In 1987 he co-founded the desktop published Journal of Contemporary Art online since 1994. That same year he began Arctic Circle exhibited in the widely travelling show Photography after Photography, as well as at the Leipzig Museum of Fine Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and at Documenta X in 1997, for which he was invited as well to assemble a group to make A Description of the Equator and Some ØtherLands. ØtherLands has been exhibited at Art Cologne, the Musée des Beaux Art Brussels, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, at the Performance Festival in Odense Denmark, and Saint Gervais, Geneva Switzerland. His next network collaborative work, h|u|m|b|o|t, 1999, has been installed at the Musée d’art Moderne Paris and St. Etienne, K&S Gallery Berlin, the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Karlsruhe, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, the National Gallery, Bonn, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Portugal and Art Basel, Switzerland. With Gregor Stehle, Axel Heide and Onesandzeros, he made Unmovie in 2002.
Unmovie has been exhibited at the ZKM Karlsruhe, the Kiasma, Helsinki, the ICC, Tokyo, The Wood St. Galleries, Pittsburgh, Lotringer13, Munich, the International Short Film Festival, Hull, UK, FILE, Sao Paolo, XTRA space Caja Murcia Foundation, Spain, Ars Electronica, Austria and DEAF04, Rotterdam. On Unmovie Philip Pocock is considered the singer/songwriter of the group.
Gregor Stehle was born in Karlsruhe Germany in 1973 and graduated in the sculpture class of Harald Klingenhoeller, Karlsruhe Academy of Art in1999. His work relates to Situationist and Cyber concepts of space. He is a Zen Buddhist monk living at the Kosanryumonji monestary in Alsace, France, and has been collaborating with Philip Pocock since 2000. He has installed his work at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Karlsruhe, Musée d’art moderne St. Etienne, Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki, the Intercultural Center (ICC) Toyko, Wood Street Galleries, Pittsburgh, the Dutch Electronic Art Festival, Rotterdam. On Unmovie Gregor Stehle is considered the drummer for the band, deeply involved with the real space link to Unmovie’s virtual world, as well as its original conceptualization.
Axel Heide was born in Schorndorf, Germany in 1972 and graduated from the Pforzheim Design School, Germany in 1997 where he studied in the Art Dept. with Philip Pocock. He has programmed the datatecture for Unmovie, and added various modes and interfaces for installations at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Karlsruhe, the ICC Toyko, the International Short Film Festival, Hull, UK, the Dutch Electronic Art Festival, Rotterdam. One of Unmovie’s originators, Axel Heide is considered the be the keyboard player in the band, fluent in Linux, PHP, Python, Perl, Action Script and database visualization algorithms.
Onesandzeros comprises Oliver Kauselmann, born in Pforzheim, Germany in 1976, and Thorsten Kloepfer, born in Backnang, Germany in 1974. They are graduates of the Pforzheim Design School, Germany (2001), where they studied in the Art Dept. With Philip Pocock. Along with their award-winning web platform MOMAK (Museum of Modern Art Kabul), Onesandzeros collaborated on the concept of Unmovie, in particular its screen and navigation spaces. They have added modes of interaction for various Unmovie installations at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Karlsruhe, Germany, Art Basel, Switzerland, the Runme Festival, Helsinki, Lotrigner13, Munich, and the Dutch Electronic Art Festival, Rotterdam.
